Cruise, Corona, Cancellation: Civility

Getting filed into a large waiting room with thousands of people, unsure exactly why, may be one of the most daunting experiences I’ve ever been in. 5 hours waiting to find out if the cruise will been canceled and wondering if it was due to the virus, the situation could have caused an uproar. The golden miracle however, was even though people responded with disappointment, everyone was civil. In fact, during the entire waiting period, people were peaceably going about their own business. Most had brought their own snacks, many were sunk into iPhones and devices, others were engaged in conversation and even had smiles. When we were informed we could leave the building (after being told the cruise was canceled) people smiled, gathers their things and civilly dialogued about the experience while walking out. Don’t get me wrong, there was complaining, a bit of yelling and uproar, but we moved toward understanding. In reality, I felt relief knowing the CDC was making sure our health wasn’t compromised by going on the cruise. I believe people are more interested in general well-being than we are sometimes led to believe. Civil interactions were witnessed in this heated moment of uncertainty. “It’s not their fault…” 3/7/20 CIVILITY
